“Fit-To-Be-Fierce” Women of Color Health Conference ~ MC MRS. LORRY HOUSTON-BURKINS
Lorry is a professional actor who received her Bachelor of Arts in Theater from the University of South Carolina. She has spent the last 10 years performing in various theater, television and film productions. Some of her favorite projects include Othello, Darker Face of the Earth, A Raisin in the Sun, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Darling Companion, and Déjà Vu. Lorry has a love for the creative arts and enjoys writing. She currently is in the process of writing her first screenplay and hopes to one day write, produce, direct and act in her own productions through her company She Did It! Productions. Keynote Speaker ~ REBECCA CHAVEZ-HOUCK ~ WRAP IT UP ~ The State of Women’s Political Health
A Utah native, Rebecca holds a B.A. in Journalism and Mass Communication and a Master of Public Administration (MPA), both from the University of Utah. She has represented constituents in Utah House District 24 since January 2008.

Rebecca serves as co-chair of the House Ethics Standing Committee. Other committee assignments include the House Government Operations and Health & Human Services Standing Committees, Health Reform Task Force, Economic Development Task Force, Government Operations and Economic Development & Workforce Services Interim Committees, and the Social Services Appropriations Subcommittee.

She has successfully sponsored nine bills that have been signed into law and championed a number of other bills and resolutions. Rebecca has been appointed to serve as the House Democratic Caucus representative on the Governor’s Multicultural Commission (2011-Present), Utah Commission on Immigration & Migration (2011-Present), and Governor’s Commission on Strengthening Utah’s Democracy (2009).

She is a member of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators (NCEL), National Association of Latino Elected Officials (NALEO), and Women Legislators’ Lobby (WiLL). She serves as Vice Chair of the Latino Voting and Elections Task Force of the National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) and is an Advisory Council member of the Women’s Legislative Council of the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL).

She is adjunct faculty for the U of U Master of Public Administration program specializing in nonprofit administration and volunteer management.

She enjoys reading, traveling, and trying out Salt Lake’s newest restaurants. Rebecca is an alumnae member of Delta Delta Delta sorority and Pi Alpha Alpha Honor Society. She and her husband of 26 years, Martin Houck, live in Salt Lake City’s Avenues area with their two children, Erica and Michael.

Keynote Speaker ~ DR. LASHONDA Y. SPENCER, MD ~ The State of Women’s Health – Infectious Disease
LaShonda Spencer, MD (Internal Medicine-Pediatrics/Infectious Diseases). Dr. Spencer is an Assistant Professor of Clinical Pediatrics at Keck School of Medicine at USC, Associate Clinic Director of MCA Clinic, and Director of Education for the Pediatric Infectious Disease Fellowship Program at LAC+USC Keck School of Medicine.

Dr. Spencer provides primary HIV care to pediatric/adolescent and adult patients, including pregnant women at the MCA program. Her areas of research interest are the prevention of HIV transmission from Mother to Child, HIV disease in Women and Adolescents. Her current research projects include Antiretroviral Concentrations in Breast Milk in HIV infected Postpartum Women; as well as several International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials Group sponsored studies.

Dr. Spencer’s committee responsibilities include: Commissioner on the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV, DHS HIV/AIDS Best Practices Committee, and the MCA Continuous Quality Improvement Committee.

Her most important accomplishment, however, is as wife and proud mother of two beautiful children.

Keynote Speaker ~ DR. LETITIA Y. SPENCER, MD ~ The State of Women’s General Health

Letitia Yvonne Spencer, MD is a female Obstetrician & Gynecologist, has 12 years of experience as a Board Certified Obstetrician/ Gynecologist. Currently, a Partner at Kaiser Permanente Riverside Medical Center; Assistant Chief of the Department of OB/GYN; Director of Surgical Services; Minimally Invasive Surgical Specialist; Clinical Faculty at University of California Riverside School of Medicine.

Letitia was born in California and raised in Salt Lake City. She came back to California for her formal education because of the diversity California has to offer. Her decision to become an obstetrician/gynecologist came after she watched the miraculous birth of her nephew and witnessed the warm and caring bedside manner of the physician. She currently enjoys participating in community events by educating women about specific health issues and mentoring youth. Her hope is that someday she will inspire someone as she was inspired.

Her practice includes general obstetrics and gynecology. She and her colleagues including other physicians, midwives, and nurse practitioners, work together to make the prenatal care experience as special as possible. In order to provide clients with the best care, she needs to understand their concerns, address their expectations, and discuss with them options to help make treatment decisions that are right for each individual. Client involvement is critical in the success of their health. Dr. Spencer cares about maintaining and improving our health by incorporating behavioral, medicinal, and surgical techniques if necessary. She has a special interest in minimally invasive surgeries, such as ablation procedures and laparoscopic hysterectomy.

Letitia is the mother of two beautifully talented girls ages 8 and10.

Mental Health Session Presenter ~ MS. DARLENE LYRIC COLES, RN, BSN, MBADarlene Coles is currently consulting with the Utah Department of Health on a project designed to address the crisis of Black infant mortality and prematurity in the state. Prior to moving to Utah in 2012, Darlene was the Director of the African American Health Program of Montgomery County, Maryland. Her primary responsibilities included managing the activities of the 9 program staff members and 60 community volunteers that worked to eliminate health disparities in the County in the areas of Infant mortality, cardiovascular health, HIV/AIDS, Oral health, Diabetes and Cancer. In addition, she represented the African American Health Program and relayed the programs mission and goals at community meetings, forums, and media presentations.

Darlene has worked as a healthcare marketing consultant in both corporate America and private industry since 1992. In addition, she has worked as a registered nurse in intensive care units throughout the United States since 1987. She is a member of a number of leading professional and public service organizations and serves on various Utah boards and committees including the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., Greater Salt Lake City Alumnae Chapter, the Council on Diversity Affairs in the Salt Lake City Mayors Office and she serves on the board of Directors for the Utah Foster Care Foundation.

Ms. Coles holds a Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing from the University of Connecticut and a Masters degree in Business from Clark Atlanta University.

Physical Health Session Presenter ~ MS. TIFFANY DYCUS, ACSM
Tiffany M. Dycus was born in Anchorage, Alaska on Elmendorf Air Force Base. As a child of military parents, she has lived in several places including Las Vegas and Okinawa, Japan. She earned her Bachelor’s degree at the University of Utah in Exercise and Sports Science. Currently, she is an ACSM certified personal trainer, and works for Salt Lake County as a fitness instructor at various senior centers throughout the valley. Tiffany is passionate about health and fitness, and utilizes her skills at Calvary Baptist Church, leading weekly boot camps. She is also a member of the Women for Christ ministry at her home church. In her spare time she enjoys playing sports, salsa dancing, and traveling.

Spiritual Health Session Presenter ~ PASTOR BRIDGETTE WATERS
Pastor Bridgette Waters was born on December 30, 1961 in Jacksonville, Florida where she and her two siblings were raised by their loving mother. She received her Business degree from Edward Waters College in December 1989 in Jacksonville, Florida. She is employed full time as an HR Business Partner and has been in the Human Resources field for the last 30 yrs.

Pastor Waters is married to Floyd Waters, Jr., and recently celebrated their 20th year anniversary. They have raised three children along with a host of children that they have taken under their wings and they are proud grandparents of 11 wonderful little blessings.

In 1995 Pastor Waters and her family moved to Utah. While standing in her kitchen, she accepted the calling that God has placed on her life to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. She was both licensed in 1998 and ordained in 2000 under the leadership of Lead Pastor Corey J. Hodges at New Pilgrim Baptist Church, Salt Lake City, Utah. She is the Assistant Pastor at New Pilgrim Baptist Church where she is a faithful servant of God. Pastor Waters is a mighty prayer warrior, worker and deliverer of God’s word. Her passion is to lead others to the Savior and equip people with knowledge, power and potential to do what God has called us to do.

Pastor Waters is well known for her ushering into worship with her starting out saying “Praise the Lord Everybody” and ending with “Hallelujah, Hallelujah, Hallelujah.”

Beautiful Young Girls of Color ~ MS. SHA’VON DANIELS ~ MC
Ms. Sha’von Daniels was born and raised in Salt Lake City, Utah and is the middle child of five. She is a graduate of The Waterford School and graduated from the University of Utah with a bachelors of Science degree in Health Promotion and Education- Consumer Emphasis. She was an active member of the Black Student Union at the University of Utah for four years. She held the positions of president, secretary, and events coordinator. At the university she was also a member of the Health Honorary Society, Eta Phi Epsilon and a peer mentor for the Center for Ethnic Students Affairs. Sha’von is currently taking courses from the University of Utah and plans on becoming a certified health education specialist before attending graduate school. Sha’von believes it is her duty to give back to her community, as she has been blessed with so much.

Financial Advisor Session Presenter ~ MS. ROBYN BADON
Robyn Badon was born in Pontiac, Michigan. At a young age, her passion for learning was evident and she thrived academically. Through her participation in a highly-competitive Upward Bound Program, Robyn was awarded a full scholarship to a prestigious New England Preparatory School in Easthampton, Massachusetts where she completed her junior and senior year of high school. Robyn returned home to Michigan in 2002 to attend her dream school, Michigan State University where she earned a B.S., in Computer Engineering and a M.S., in Operations and Engineering Management. In 2009, Robyn accepted an offer to join one of Wall Street’s most prestigious firms – Goldman Sachs & Co., in Salt Lake City. Robyn now works as a Technical Analyst for American Express, a role that leverages her analytical and financial experiences and education. In her spare time, Robyn enjoys spending time with friends, working out, volunteering, and traveling. She is also an avid sports fan. Robyn attends Calvary Baptist Church and gratefully serves in the music department and children’s church ministry.

Mane Event Session Presenter – MS. TONI BYRD
Ms. Toni Byrd- recently joined the Ebony & Ivory Hair Design Styling team as an apprentice after a long career in the theater. She’s always had an interest in cosmetology. And her career in theater kept her interest alive with the hope of someday incorporating the two. That’s her… sporting the hair she came into the world with. Since then she’s had it pressed, relaxed, Jheri curled, in braids, weaved, worn wigs, you name it. And through it all, she’s learned to respect the hair she came into the world with.

Make-up Application Session Presenter – MRS. MICHELLE LOVE-DAY
Michelle Love-Day is originally from Lorain, Ohio, outside of Cleveland. She went to Bowling Green State University where she received her bachelor’s in Education and went on to obtain her Masters in Reading. She has been an educator for 12 years and has loved her career. She currently is a Principal in Granite School district. She enjoys doing public speaking occasionally at local workshops and teacher conferences. While teaching, she became certified in English as a Second Language; Gifted endorsed; and later obtained her Masters in Administration from the U of U. She also is an instructor at the University of Phoenix for their reading and administration courses in the evening. In her spare time, she enjoys singing in the church choir, running, spending time with family and friends, and performing in musical and plays across the local stage here in Utah. She also is the director of the Pearls of Praise, Praise dance with the Calvary Baptist Church. She has been wearing Mary Kay for 10 years and decided just last year to share the gift of taking care of your skin with others. Being this busy has helped balance her life and she is thankful to her family and friends that support her. “God first, family second, and career third.” -Mary Kay Ash
