“Fit-To-Be-Fierce” Women of Color Health Conference ~ MC MRS. LORRY HOUSTON-BURKINS
Lorry is a professional actor who received her Bachelor of Arts in Theater from the University of South Carolina. She has spent the last 10 years performing in various theater, television and film productions. Some of her favorite projects include Othello, Darker Face of the Earth, A Raisin in the Sun, Tyler Perry’s House of Payne, Darling Companion, and Déjà Vu. Lorry has a love for the creative arts and enjoys writing. She currently is in the process of writing her first screenplay and hopes to one day write, produce, direct and act in her own productions through her company She Did It! Productions. Keynote Speaker ~ Loralee Kodzo
Consultant L.T. Kodzo is contracted to support business operations for the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. She has over 15 years experience working for companies high on Fortune’s top 50.
A dynamic speaker and sought-after facilitator, Kodzo has a gift for discussing complex issues to digestible slices. She has taught hundreds of classes around the world; more that 100 people have been certified through her mentorship.
Her tumultuous youth has drawn her to provide direct, honest answers for the challenging questions young people ask, including tough topics like sex, drugs, and abortion. She has spent over 25 years in various teaching and mentoring roles with young people. These include teaching Sunday school and Christian seminary at public schools; speaking at Campus Crusade for Christ at the University of Utah; speaking and teaching in Togo, West Africa, mentoring young writers, and contributing to YA newsletters.
Kodzo graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City and attended Westminster College for two years. Twenty years later – in 2007- she graduated from the University of Utah with a BA in English.
She regularly attends writers’ conferences and a writers’ critique group. She is a member of American Christian Fiction Writers (ACFW) and was a finalist in the 2010 ACFW Genesis Contest in the YA category. Kodzo and her husband have two grown children.

Physical Health Speaker ~ Michele Johnson
Michele was born and raised in Detroit Michigan, lived in Honolulu for 13 years where she moved to pursue her Masters, and close to 19 years in Salt Lake City after being recruited to work at the University of Utah. She recently retired after working just shy of 29 years in the fields of occupational safety and environmental protection, with a specialty in biological safety for research and clinics. She has served on a number of professional association committees, public service organizations and boards over the years.
Michele received her BS in Botany from the University of Michigan where she conducted undergraduate research in parasitology. Her Masters degree is in Public Health from the University of Hawaii at Manoa. She is a Registered Biosafety Professional (RBP) and thrives on active participation in volunteer community activities and especially mentoring. This is her 5th year working with Ms. EmmaLiz and the BDP team on fulfilling her dream of this Fit-To-Be-Fierce Women of Color and Bring A Brother Conference.
She is proud of her two witty, creative, hard working, problem solving and all around fantastic millennial adult sons Myke and Nick; loves walking, hiking, camping, volleyball, West coast swing, cha cha, and salsa dancing; her hobbies are mini coral reef aquarist, avid reader, music, and film enthusiast, horticulture, and with the recent retirement bought an ukulele and is having a blast learning to play.
Mental Health Speaker ~ Valerie Flattes
Valerie Flattes has been an instructor in the College of Nursing since 2001. Her background in nursing includes medical surgical nursing, obstetrics, long term care, emergency nursing, and home health. As a nurse practitioner, Valerie opened a primary care practice with another nurse practitioner in 2005 and focused her care on adults and geriatric clients. Because she returned to school for a PhD, she has closed her primary care practice. She is currently a second year PhD student at University of Utah Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence. Valerie has a strong commitment to community service and has served as a member or officer in several community organizations over the last 15 years. She has also served on various college committees over the last 12 years. Valerie has shown a passion for teaching and geriatrics. She attended the Geriatric Nurse education Consortium (GNEC) in 2008 and has been a champion of enhancing the nursing curriculum in geriatrics.
Spiritual Health Speaker ~ Vicki Lynn Roberson Herndon
Vicki is the fourth daughter and the fifth child of Ida Green Roberson Childress and Norman Gene Roberson Sr. She is a widower of 4 1/2 years after being married to her one true love for 12 1/2 wonderful years, Mr. Rick Charles Herndon. She is the mother of one beautiful daughter, Joycelyn Moneece Roberson, and a grandmother of four, Guardian Angel, Destiny Angel, Journey Angel and JaKorey Angel.
Vicki has been a member of Greater Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Houston, Texas for 36 years, but most importantly, she states; “I’m a child of The King, The One and True Living God.”
Financial Health Speaker ~ Jennifer Rohn
Jennifer Rohn is the Director of Communications at Fair Credit Foundation, a Salt Lake City based non-profit dedicated to expanding financial capability for all. For the past 7 years she has worked with the agency in developing community outreach and education programs specifically targeted to help individuals and families better understand personal financial management concepts and build long-term self-sufficiency. A Utah native, Jennifer holds a Bachelor degree in Communication from the University of Utah and a Masters of Professional Communication from Westminster College.
